Always room for tomatoes in the garden
While I absolutely ❤️🍅 eating fresh harvested home grown tomatoes, I would grow them even if I couldn’t stand them. Why on this beautiful green and blue planet would I utter such silliness? Here’s a plant that has abundant leaves that are toxic to some common garden pests. Yes, you can keep some pests away without using cans or sprays full of toxic chemicals that pollute our waterways and end up in our oceans!! And tomato leaves make it cheap and effective.
Homegrown tomatoes make delicious pico de gallo fresh chunky salsa, are loaded with vitamin C and lycopene, and easy to save some seeds from a really good tomato and grow it next season. If you don’t care for them, neighbors are often happy to take them off your hands, and you can just compost them back into the earth and build up your soils. If you haven’t befriended tomatoes yet, you may want to consider it. With so many benefits, there will always be room for tomatoes in our garden.
IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE to add:make sure whatever jar you’re pouring boiling water is safe for high temperatures otherwise it could shatter.
